Why are avocados toxic to birds?

AVOCADOS are safe for human beings but not for birds. This is due to the fact that avocados contain a compound known as “persin”, which is a fungicidal toxin that can make birds become very sick or even kill them.

Persin is a type of fatty acid derivative. By consuming persin, birds will not be able to perch and this will subsequently lead to difficulty in breathing.

This chemical will also cause fluid to accumulate around the bird’s heart and lungs, causing liver or kidney failure or death in some cases.  – BY SCIENCE BRIDGE ACADEMY
