As Malaysia takes the helm as Chair of ASEAN, we are presented with a golden opportunity to lead the region into a new era of innovation, collaboration, and technological advancement.

This leadership role is not merely ceremonial; it comes with the responsibility and privilege of steering Southeast Asia toward a future defined by shared prosperity and resilience, driven by science, technology, and innovation (STI).

ASEAN, with its diverse member states, is a region brimming with untapped potential. Malaysia, as a rising technology leader, is uniquely positioned to harness this potential.

Our expertise in sectors such as biotechnology, plantation, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing can serve as a foundation to strengthen STI collaboration among member countries. By leveraging our capabilities, we can establish Malaysia as a hub for innovation and a model for regional cooperation.

A key priority should be fostering talent and knowledge exchange. Student and talent exchange programs across ASEAN can play a pivotal role in building a skilled workforce ready to tackle the challenges of the future. Imagine a regional framework where students and researchers move seamlessly between member countries, sharing insights and innovations. This exchange would not only enrich the participants but also foster a sense of unity and shared purpose within ASEAN.

As people strive to enhance their well-being, many resort to shortcuts by consuming herbal health products often associated with various health benefits without verifying their authenticity.

In this context, society must be wiser and more cautious to ensure that every product used is safe, effective, and free from fraud.

The Growing Herbal Industry in Malaysia

Malaysia, a country rich in medicinal plants, has witnessed the rapid growth of the herbal product industry. Various plant-based products are advertised as solutions to a wide range of health issues.

Some products claim to cure diseases such as diabetes and hypertension or even address complex health problems with a single solution. These “miraculous” claims often attract consumers seeking quick fixes.

However, many products lack robust scientific backing. Instead, they rely on general studies of specific ingredients without conducting specific research on the product being sold.

For example, Cat’s Whiskers leaves are believed to affect diabetes, but not all products containing these leaves yield the same results. Factors such as planting location, plant age, and processing methods significantly influence a product’s efficacy.

Risks of Misuse and Mislabelling

One common issue is the misuse of names and plant identities. For instance, Black Turmeric and Black Ginger are often mislabelled.

Some products in the market are labelled as Black Turmeric coffee but contain Black Ginger. This confusion not only misleads consumers but can also pose risks, as these plants have different chemical compositions and health benefits.

Black Turmeric contains metabolites such as camphor, germacrone, and eucalyptol, which are linked to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In contrast, Black Ginger is known for flavonoids like 5,7-dimethoxyflavone, associated with anti-obesity and cardioprotective effects.

If consumers use the wrong product for a specific purpose, it may not provide the intended benefits and could cause other side effects. Thus, scientific research plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of herbal products.

A study conducted by researchers at the Natural Product and Medicinal Research Laboratory, Universiti Putra Malaysia, in collaboration with Berkat Curcuma Caesia Sdn. Bhd., successfully distinguished Black Turmeric from Black Ginger scientifically.

Their findings highlighted differences such as the physical characteristics, the purple streaks on Black Turmeric leaves, and the camphor aroma in its rhizomes, absent in Black Ginger.

The Importance of Scientific Approaches

Scientific approaches like these are essential for establishing quality standards and transparency in the herbal product industry. Manufacturers must ensure their products undergo plant identity verification, toxicity testing, and efficacy studies before reaching the market.

These measures not only protect consumers but also enhance the credibility of local products in global markets.

Consumer Guidelines for Herbal Products

While the public has access to various herbal products, the following guidelines can help ensure safety and efficacy:

  • Check Product Labels: Ensure the label includes complete information, such as the plant’s scientific name, active ingredients, and certification from authorities like the Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM).
  • Look for Scientific Evidence: Products claiming specific health benefits should be supported by published scientific research. Avoid products with overly good-to-be-true claims without solid proof.
  • Be Wary of Cheap Prices: Quality herbal products often incur high costs for research and production. Extremely cheap products may not use safe or high-quality ingredients.
  • Consult Health Experts: Before consuming any herbal product, consult a doctor or health expert, especially if you have chronic illnesses or are on other medications.

Understand Risks: Herbal products also contain active chemicals that may cause side effects. Excessive or improper use can be harmful.

Herbs hold great potential as traditional remedies, but they must undergo
thorough scientific research to ensure their safety and effectiveness. Public awareness and wisdom are crucial to avoid fraud and health risks associated with herbal product consumption.

Society can reap the benefits of local herbal treasures without compromising their safety and health by exercising caution and prioritizing verified information.
