As Malaysia’s first science newspaper, The Petri Dish began as a small initiative driven by scientists, researchers, and science communicators who shared a commitment to accurate reporting and thoughtful storytelling. From its earliest days, the publication set out to make science approachable without compromising on rigor, respecting both the integrity of research and the intelligence of its readers.
To make science accessible, accurate, and relevant by translating complex research and scientific ideas into clear, engaging stories that inform public understanding, encourage critical thinking, and support evidence-based conversations.
To be a trusted platform for science communication in the region, bridging the gap between researchers and the public, and fostering a society that values scientific knowledge, curiosity, and informed decision-making.
Ts. Dr Mahaletchumy Arujanan is one scientist who has opted to be out in the forefront as a science journalist than work with test tubes. She loves engaging with the public and this passion together with her multiple science background has put her in good stead as an effective science communicator. She has a PhD in Science Communication, Masters in Biotechnology and Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology and Biochemistry. Her training provides her with the strong foundation to bring science and biotechnology to the public domain, while her passion connects her with her audience locally and on the international podium. She enjoys her non-routine job and the freedom to try out new communication approaches. Currently she holds court as the Executive Director of the Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre and is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of The Petri Dish.

The Petri Dish has been a pioneering force in science communication, and what you’ve achieved — often against the odds — is a true legacy. It is nice to see the website in a new form. All the best.
The Petri Dish has been at the forefront of highlighting science & tech news in Malaysia for well over a decade due to unstinting efforts and dedication from the editorial team. The Petri Dish even highlighted education-technology innovations on collaborative learning of healthcare skills, developed by myself and Dr Arkendu Sen. The Petri Dish has also given timely perspectives on advancing STEM education, correcting misinformation and providing schools and universities with a stream of science communication.
The Petri Dish has been such an inspiring platform that made science communication in Malaysia more accessible. As a postgraduate student who had the privilege to attend Dr Maha’s talk at UPM, I have always admired your dedication to promoting biotechnology and science awareness. Thank you for your immense contribution.
